Teaching Mindfulness in an Unmindful System.Francis Gilbert - 2024 - British Journal of Educational Studies 72 (3):359-378.
This article explores a case study of a mindfulness teacher, Beth, and her experiences of teaching mindfulness to 11- to 16-year-olds in several English schools. It shows why Beth was drawn to teaching mindfulness, which was both to alleviate the stress amongst her pupils and improve her own mental health. It illustrates how and why she became a confident, successful mindfulness teacher: she learnt about mindfulness at various classes, retreats and teacher-education training sessions, spending thousands of pounds on her own (...)

Laws in ecology: Diverse modes of explanation for a holistic science.Richard Gunton & Francis Gilbert - 2017 - Zygon 52 (2):538-560.
Ecology's reputation as a holistic science is partly due to widespread misconceptions of its nature as well as shortcomings in its methodology. This article argues that the pursuit of empirical laws of ecology can foster the emergence of a more unified and predictive science based on complementary modes of explanation. Numerical analyses of population dynamics have a distinguished pedigree, spatial analyses generate predictive laws of macroecology, and physical analyses are typically pursued by the ecosystem paradigm. The most characteristically ecological laws, (...)

    Technoscience et sagesse?Gilbert Hottois - 2002
La recherche technoscientifique s'inscrit, depuis Francis Bacon et René Descartes, dans une tradition opérative. La philosophie contemporaine est-elle en mesure de symboliser d'une manière satisfaisante l'univers technoscientifique dans lequel nous vivons?

    Illustrations on the Moral Sense. [REVIEW]S. C. A. - 1972 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (3):556-557.
A welcome reprint of an important work of Hutcheson with an excellent philosophical and scholarly study of the issues between Hutcheson and the rationalist Gilbert Burnet in respect to the former's contributions to metaethics. The study, modestly entitled "Editor's Introduction" is a philosophical contribution to the study of the Moral Sense Theory which argues forcibly for the plausibility of Hutcheson's epistemology of morals as a form of non-cognitivism that recognizes the proper role of reason. Peach adopts a defeasibility interpretation (...)

    Francis Bacon and Magnetical Cosmology.Xiaona Wang - 2016 - Isis 107 (4):707-721.
A short-lived but important movement in seventeenth-century English natural philosophy—which scholars call “magnetical philosophy” or “magnetical cosmology”—sought to understand gravity (both terrestrial and celestial) by analogy with magnetism. The movement was clearly inspired by William Gilbert’s De magnete (1600) and culminated with Robert Hooke’s prefiguring of the universal principle of gravitation, which he personally communicated to Isaac Newton in 1679. But the magnetical cosmology, as professed by those in the movement, differed from Gilbert’s philosophy in highly significant ways. (...)

    On the Interference of Fullerenes and Other Massive Particles.S. Sulcs, B. C. Gilbert & C. F. Osborne - 2002 - Foundations of Physics 32 (8):1251-1271.
We report the results of an optical analogue of the fullerene molecule diffraction experiment. Our results, and an analysis of the fullerene experiment, suggest that the patterns observed in the latter can be explained using a localized particle model. There is no evidence that the grating period contributed to the published fullerene diffraction pattern. De Broglie waves, if they exist, are unlikely to have played a significant part in the fullerene diffraction experiment. The observed patterns are not consistent with those (...)

    The Metaphysics of Consistency.Francis S. Haserot - 1949 - Review of Metaphysics 2 (7):3 - 29.
However, metaphysics itself has presuppositions. In the order of explanation the governing presupposition of intelligible metaphysics is that the world itself is intelligible. By 'intelligible' I mean 'free from contradiction'. By 'the world' I mean the range of things that possess being of any kind, or, in other words, the realm of being. If the presupposition referred to is accepted metaphysics is possible; if not, it is not. The word 'presupposition' must be taken literally. The presupposition in question is, in (...)
